The 2nd Annual Silk Hope Farm Heritage Writing Contest The committee tasked with putting together this year’s program book was having a terrible time coming up with new and fresh articles to include. Willing writers are just hard to find. While sharpening our pencils, it occurred to us that most of the pencils in the community were to be found at our elementary school. Maybe we could convince some kids to help us out…but they would probably rather be playing than writing….we would have to get the teachers to help…it would be a good excuse for writing practice…maybe the principal would encourage that….throw in some prizes and it just might work !!
As it turned out, former principal, Janice Frazier, agreed. She got our teachers to agree, and they got our young scribes to agree. A writing contest was born! The best entries would be published in the program book and all entries would be displayed at the Ruritan’s major events.
The kids were grouped by grade level: Kindergarten through 2nd, 3rd through 5th, and 6th through 8th. This year the younger group wrote about “View from a farm Animal”. The middle group wrote a Thank You letter to a Farmer. The older kids wrote about why their parents should be involved with the community.
Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all who entered.
